Let's try the 80's. I'm a big fan of 'Talk Talk' and this is 'Life's what you make it'. Embedding disabled etc...

I'll have to come back to the Gary Numan - but the Talk Talk one is an all time favourite of mine.
I've got to say - I've never heard anything else by Mud - but I love Tiger Feet! Its like Footloose - just makes you want to get up & dance! |

Anna, all the way back up there a bit, Blancmange by name alone was sure to put me in mind of the MP sketch. But, yeah, that's New Wave, right down the
alley for a strike alright. I should add that to the voluminous ranks of 80's New Wave I have.
"I Live For the Sun"...groovy tune. I dig it. That Mud song...I think even the Bay City Rollers could beat the shit out of them. It's representative, but that's not necessarily good.
The original is balls out. Tia Carrera should never have been let near it. "Ballroom Blitz" makes 'kickass' want to shine its shoes before leaving home.
The Talk Talk song is fantastic. Got it in the "80s Arsenal" I actually was reintroduced to it through the killer 'radio' selections on
the video game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" that was set in a fictional Miami-like city called Vice City, during the Miami Vice-driven mid-80's.
Whenever the character is in a car, he can choose the radio station, and they all played music from that time period.
"Cars" is just a solid classic of the time. Numan made the 80s synthesizer what it was. |

I had forgotten that cars song - & I don't think I'd ever seen the video. Love it - so 80s.
& I just keep playing the Talk Talk song over & over. it was used for a telecom ad here a few years ago. The Mud song was the top selling single in its year (1974) in the UK. I think it was only a minor hit in NZ. But if you think thats bad... Like most old fogies I think the music of my era is the best (well... in my case I think the 60s are the best & I was still a child then) but 1 improvement the 90s & 00s made is that the lead of the boy band should be smoking hot - & able to sing as well (or have their voices enhanced. ) Ladies & Gentlemen, from 1979 I give you.... Racey! |

I used to have Gary Numan's Cars album on cassette. I'm doing a search in at TradeMe in the hopes of picking it up on CD. Might be a bit of a wait but
I'm in no hurry.
I was a real 80's gal (Altered Images, ABC, Human League, Blancmange etc, etc..) . Really into the New Wave in a big way but I still loves me some 70's Glam Rock. Racy... well... not so much.
And speaking of Altered Images..

Heh, can't wait for Matt's reaction to Racey! Next to them Bay City Rollers were cutting edge
I especially like the bits were the lead bares his scrawny chest!
I'd never heard of Altered Images. I spent a lot of the early 80s in Switzerland, so I did miss a few trends. I found that tune pleasant but not outstanding. |

For shame!!! Never heard of Altered Images!!!
Tsk. I have their album 'Bite'. It's a good'un! Tomorrow I shall be inflicting ( ) The Specials and their spinoff group Fun Boy Three on you. Be warned.
But for now, number 2 son is home and is kicking me pff the 'puter. (Boo! Hiss!)

As promised, The Specials. I'll also include the page link as I'd recommend going to the list of 'More From:' There's some really great
songs from them there. Especially 'Nelson Mandela' and 'A Message to you Rudy'.

I remember (& loved ) The Specials. I was also in England during part of the early 80s & they were super huge. I seem to remember that they never made
that much money out of their success though.

Something I didn't know but just found out yesterday, whilst I spent goodness knows how long listening to Altered Images tracks, Specials and Fun Boy Three
etc... that Terry Hall of FB3 co-wrote 'Our Lips are Sealed' with Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's.
Fun Boy Three does a version of it on their album 'Waiting', which I have, and it's far better than the Go-Go's version. But then that's just my 'pinion.
It also has a brilliant instrumental of 'Murder She Said', and being the Agatha Christie fan that I am I appreciate that. This is a snippet of it, not the whole thing. It was the only version I could find, so you get a bunny with it.

I'l have to search out the full version sometime, Anna!
Just played the Halleluiah (sp) & my husband & I both like it! Have you played Racey yet Matt? (Don't ban me, please don't ban me!)

Ok, here is 1 of my favourite songs & videos from the 80s. & I'll bet it cost peanuts to make! & I would have loved to look like Kim Wilde!

I don't know that one. I know her 'Kids in America' and that 'other' one (gone blank, you know what I mean...) but this is one I hadn't
heard, but I like it!

This might be another example of something that was big in 1 country not being a hit in another.. Was the other song you were trying to think of
"Cambodia" or her cover of that old Supremes song "Set Me Free"
|

Urm... I'll have to go look it up.
One thing though, I do know she's gotten into gardening in a big way. I presume she may front some TV show, not sure on the details, but I remember watching her on Burke's Backyard (I think) some years back.

Thats the one I meant you keep me hanging on!
I read she was now a gardening guru. Just about every old song I play on youtube has me racing to Wikipedia! |
